Inner Mongolia Establishes Hotline For Reporting Suspected Cryptocurrency Miners

One would be hard-pressed to find any country in the world right now that has not, at the very least, heard about cryptocurrency and then may have subsequently decided what to do about it in the context of the nation being discussed.

Now though, it looks like various authorities prevalent in Inner Mongolia have decided to crack down even more on cryptocurrency mining that has been taking place there for a while now. The mining operations there may be in jeopardy as they are said to be inadvertently contributing to the carbon emissions being generated.

DRC announces hotline

The DRC had announced to the public that there is now a direct and straightforward way of reporting on outlying crypto operations that may exist within the surrounding area, referring to a hotline. To provide some context, Inner Mongolia had witnessed a surge of cryptocurrency mining activities and operations between the September of 2019 and the April of 2020. During this time, the operators had cumulatively made up just over 7.7% of the world’s total BTC hash rate.

The hotline had been announced around the time when Beijing is becoming increasingly ambitious and proactive when it comes to the reduction of the aforementioned carbon emission. To this end, various Chinese authorities have thus heavily inspected Inner Mongolia, a region where cheap and plentiful electricity still depends on the existence and utilization of fossil fuels. Furthermore, it had also been revealed that Inner Mongolia had additionally been involved in the approval of the largest amount of any new capacity ever recorded for the purposes of the establishment of power plants powered by coal. This had occurred between the years of 2016-2020.

Crackdown continues

Through this recent announcement, one thing is made clear, and that is the fact that the authorities are bolstering their efforts towards cracking down on illegal as well energy-intensive mining activities and operations. The hotline, along with email and physical mail services, is said to grant the public a way of informing the appropriate authorities and help reduce mining activity that may be prevalent in the area.

Ultimately, the hotline could be argued to simply be the next step by the authorities to take exhibit increased control over the mining operations. In related news, the announcement had also noted that certain entities might act as data centers. However, they may simultaneously be taking part in illegal crypto mining.
